Head Coach - Yan Yang
Our head coach and founder of iDive Diving Academy is Yan Yang, a successful competitive diving coach who gains recognition from her experience as a professional athlete
in China. Yan competed at the highest level of competition during her diving career on the Chinese
National Team. She won Gold medals at the World University Games in 1991 and 1993 and also
finished in the top three standing at the China National Championships from 1990-1993. Yan's extensive
knowledge in diving and her focused approach has helped to develop many world class divers in both
China and Canada.
Yan is also a coach for the BC Provincial Team. She holds a NCCP Level 3 Coaching Title and a degree in
Kinesiology from the acclaimed Tianjin University of Sport in China. Her coaching qualifications and diving
experience are uniquely matched to developing world class competitive divers.
During Yan's coaching career in China, she developed Junior National Champion divers, Sang Xue and
Wang Hao, both of whom moved on to compete and win Gold medals at the 2000 World Championships and
the 2000 Olympic Games in Women's Synchronized 10 m Platform (Sang Xue), as well as the 2011 World Championships and 2012 Olympic Games in Women's Synchronized 10 m Platform (Wang Hao).
In Canada, Yan continued her
coaching career with the Kitchener Waterloo Diving Club from 2001-2006 and the Vancouver Aquatic Centre Divers from 2006-2011. During that tine, she developed 8 National level divers
who won 12 medals at the Canadian Junior National Championships and the Senior National
Championships. At the 2009 Canada Sumer Games, her diver won a bronze medal for the Province of
British Columbia. Three of her National level divers also qualified for the Canadian Junior National
Team and competed at the World Junior Championships in 2008 and the Amsterdam Diving Cup in
Since the inception of iDive in 2011, Yan has grown the Academy to be the largest High-Performance Diving Club in BC. iDive has now coached the most Canadian National level divers in the Lower Mainland from their host pools in Vancouver.
Yan is currently developing 12 National level divers who have so far won 1 Bronze Medal and 33 Top-12 place finishes at the Canadian Junior National Championships and the Senior National Championships.
With many new team members progressing to the competitive stage, the best is yet to come for iDive!
Yan also recently envisioned and organized the highly succesful 2016 iDive International Diving Invitational at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre,
which was attended by many of BC's top diving clubs and 3 high level dive teams from China.
iDive also organized and held 2 High Performance training camps in Tianjin (2015) and Shanghai (2016) as special training opportunities for the Academy's elite divers.
These camps have attracted the attention of many other clubs and coaches in Canada, the USA and China.
Assistant Coach - Igor Kopecky
Igor is a NCCP Level 3 Coach and Course conductor for Competitive Intro and Competitive Development. Igor was a National Team diver winning 5 national titles over all 3 disciplines, 1m, 3m and 10m Platform.
After his first degree in Kinesiology, he started coaching diving as well as pursuing an Education degree. Igor taught junior high school for two years before taking over the Head Coach position at Dive Calgary.
During his 5 years at Dive Calgary, he trained numerous National and International medalists. After establishing the programs and coaches in Calgary, he took on the challenge of developing and working with the Peruvian National Diving team.
He has coached at the World Cup, World Series, South American Championships, Commonwealth Games, World Junior Championships and the Pan Am Games.
Currently, Igor is pursuing his Masters in High Performance Coaching and Technical Leadership from UBC.
Igor is excited to bring his experience, skills and love of the sport to iDive.
Assistant Coach - Lydia Bellis
Lydia has been involved in the sport of diving for a number of years, and trained with head coach Yan Yang in iDive's Competitive program at VAC since the club's establishment.
In addition to her diving experience Lydia also has a background in gymnastics, and holds a NCCP Level 2 Instructor Diving Certificate.
Lydia has been coaching diving since 2010. She also recently attended the BC Winter Games as Coach and chaperone for the divers representing Zone 5.
Lydia coaches and assists in the Pre-Competitive programs at VAC.
Assistant Coach - Carey Chan
As a diver in high scohol, Carey trained with renowned dive coach Boxi Liang as well as Yan Yang at Vancouver Aquatic Centre Divers,
competing at the Provincial, National and International levels. Carey was a Team BC member at the 2009 Canada Games, as well as a Junior National Team member of Team Canada at the 2010 Dutch Open in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Carey later attended the University of Michigan and had the privilege of diving on the Varsity Women's swim and dive team. As a student-athlete, she finished her college career with a Bachelor's degree in Biopsychology and Asian Studies and an All-American honour in the platform diving event, finishing top 8 at the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships.
Currently, Carey is seeking to pursue a Masters of Physical Therapy at the University of British Columbia.
Assistant Coach - May Wang
May grew up in Victoria and dove for Boardworks Dive Club for 9 years. During those years, she competed Nationally and Provincially.
In 2008, she placed second at the Canadian Junior Development Nationals. She started coaching in 2010, and has experience with coaching divers of all ages.
She is currently a full time student at UBC, and loves working with kids.
